Tailings Water Remediation, Northern Ontario Mine

Project: Microbial Induced Calcite Precipitation (MICP)

Start Date: January 2017

Completion Date: July 2017

The objective is to determine if MICP is a viable option to decrease heavy metal mobilization and acid generation. In Phase 1 of the project tailings water samples were examined for ureolytic bacteria which are capable of breaking down urea and producing calcium carbonate which can trap metals and neutralize any sulfides in the water. The tailings water was positive for these bacteria and their activity. Thus, phase 2 commenced and four tailings water reactors: two controls, two varying nutrients to stimulate bacterial growth were run in parallel. The total metals were measured and compared from beginning to end.
